What to Save This School Year (Before the Pile Takes Over)

What to Save This School Year (Before the Pile Takes Over)

A simple, guilt-free guide to keeping what matters—and letting go of the rest.

The artwork starts coming home in the first week. A painting here, a worksheet there, a construction paper something that you can't quite identify, but that your child is inexplicably proud of. By October, it's a pile. By May, it's a problem.

The thing is—you don't need to save it all to honor your child’s creativity. You just need a simple system for the highlights, and the permission to let the rest go.

Here's both.

You don't need to keep everything to keep the memories. You just need to keep the right things.

Why the Pile Happens

It's not disorganization. It's love with nowhere to go. Every piece that comes home represents effort, creativity, a moment in your child's day that you might not have been there to see. Throwing it away feels wrong. Keeping all of it feels impossible.

The answer isn't a bigger bin. It's a better filter—one you apply at the start of the year, not at the end when you're overwhelmed, and feel guilty, and the pile has doubled.

A good filter applied early beats a “better” system you don’t actually use.

What's Actually Worth Saving

Not all school papers are created equal. Here's the shortcut: If a piece sparks an emotion—pride, laughter, a squeeze in the chest—it's worth keeping. If you feel nothing picking it up, it can go.

Beyond the gut check, a few categories are almost always worth saving:

Self-portraits

One per year, every year, without fail. Side-by-side, a kindergarten through fifth grade self-portrait series is one of the most extraordinary things a parent can have. Don't skip a year.

Handwriting at its most current

The invented spelling. The wobbly letters. The first time they write a full sentence without help. These details disappear faster than almost anything else about childhood—and they're irreplaceable.

Something they made 'just because'

The things children make without being asked are the most revealing. A story they wrote on a weekend. A drawing they did in the back of the car. These are often the best pieces in any collection.

A piece they're proud of

Let them choose one. Their pick will surprise you, and it'll tell you something about who they are right now that no teacher note ever could.

One piece from each subject they loved

The science project they couldn't stop talking about. The English essay they actually cared about. A math worksheet where something finally clicked. Keep the evidence of what lit them up.

What You Can Let Go

Duplicate worksheets. Generic coloring pages with no personal touch. Practice drills. Multiples of the same craft—give the others away as a gift! Torn or damaged pieces. Anything you feel obligated to keep but feel nothing looking at.

A good rule: if it's not on your list and it didn't make you feel something when you picked it up, it goes. The pile will be smaller. What's left will actually get looked at.

One handprint turkey per child. That's the rule. You don't need seven.

The System That Actually Works

One folder or box per child, labeled with their name, grade, and year. Pull it out at the end of each semester or school year—whichever feels manageable—and do a 15-minute sort. Keep what meets the filter. Let the rest go. That's the whole system.

The secret isn't the container. It's the habit of returning to it on a regular schedule, before the pile gets big enough to feel like a project.

And when you're ready to do something beautiful with what you've saved—turn it into a book that actually lives somewhere it can be seen—that's what we're here for.
